About the Creator

Herbal News SA was founded by Alyssa Harmse, a certified herbal practitioner and lifelong advocate for natural health in South Africa. Growing up in the Western Cape, Alyssa was raised with deep respect for the healing plants around her — from rooibos to devil’s claw, from buchu to honeybush. After years of studying ethnobotany and working alongside traditional healers, she saw a gap: valuable knowledge was being lost or fragmented online. So she created Herbal News SA to preserve, share, and elevate this vital heritage.

Why This Website Exists

Too often, South Africa’s rich herbal traditions are overlooked, misunderstood, or commercialized without context. We created this platform to honor the knowledge of our elders, support ethical herbal practice, and ensure that accurate, respectful information is accessible to everyone — not just those with access to academic journals or private clinics.

Our Values

Every article we publish is grounded in three core principles:

  • Authenticity — We source information directly from practitioners and communities.
  • Respect — We honor indigenous knowledge and never appropriate it without permission or context.
  • Accuracy — We verify claims, cite research, and update content as new evidence emerges.

We don’t sell products. We don’t chase clicks. We’re here to inform, inspire, and build a community rooted in truth and tradition.
